Mastopexy

Mastopexy. Breast Lift.

Am I a good candidate for this surgery?

A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness.  These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result form pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity and heredity.
A breast lift or mastopexy raises and firms the breast by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.  If nipple position is somewhat below the level of the crease fold of the breast, then a breast lift with or without an implant is likely needed. If you are a smoker, it is recommended that one stop prior to surgery and at least 10 days post operatively.

What is the surgery?

The breast lift surgery can be achieved through a variety of incision patterns and techniques.  The appropriate technique for you will be determined based on the breast size, shape, size and position of the areolas, degree of breast sagging, and skin quality and elasticity.  General anesthesia is used and surgery takes about 2 hours. It is an outpatient operation.

The best mastopexy is the one that gives the desired shape with a minimal length of incision. That is why there is a circumareolar or bennelli, a vertical or ice cream cone pattern, and the inverted t type of mastopexies. The upper half moon or crescent type lift is, I believe, a lift in name only. After your breasts are reshaped and excess skin is removed, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed.  Some incision lines resulting from breast lift are visible on the breast surface.  Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time.

What does the surgery not do?

Breast lift or mastopexy does not significantly change the size of breasts or round out the upper pole of the breast.   If you want more fullness an implant can be placed along with the lifting procedure.

What can I expect afterwards?

One would require a care giver for at least 24 hours after surgery and it is even better to have someone with you for 2-3 days.   One would require at least 7 days off from work/school to give one time to recover for the surgery and anesthesia.  Full exercise is resumed at 6 weeks.
